The 140th Canton Fair opens in Guangzhou on 15 October 2026, and it is the single largest concentration of Chinese manufacturers you can meet in one place this year. Whether it is worth your time depends on one thing: whether the categories you buy are exhibited in the phase you attend.
The fair runs in three phases across three weeks, and each phase covers a completely different part of the product world. Turning up in the wrong week is the most common and most expensive mistake first-time visitors make.
Here is what each phase covers, how to get in, and how to get real value out of it even if you never get on a plane.
What the 140th Canton Fair Is
- · Official name: China Import and Export Fair, co-hosted by China's Ministry of Commerce and the People's Government of Guangdong Province, organised by the China Foreign Trade Centre
- · History: held twice a year in Guangzhou since 1957, with 139 sessions completed
- · Scale: the 140th session covers a total exhibition area of about 1.55 million square metres
- · Exhibitors: more than 30,000 enterprises are expected, including around 2,800 Canton Fair brand exhibitors, and roughly one third of exhibitors are high-tech enterprises, single champions or specialised small and medium manufacturers
- · Buyer attendance at the previous session: the 139th Canton Fair drew 314,000 overseas buyers from 220 countries and regions on site
- · Venue: the Canton Fair Complex in Pazhou, Guangzhou
That last number is also the honest warning. A fair this large does not reward wandering. It rewards a plan.
The Three Phases, and What You Can Actually Source
Phase 1: 15 to 19 October 2026, advanced manufacturing
Phase 1 is the one most electronics and appliance buyers want. Its themes include household electrical appliances, consumer electronics and information products, industrial automation and intelligent manufacturing, new energy vehicles and smart mobility, lighting equipment, electronic and electrical products, new energy resources, hardware and tools.
It also carries the machinery side of the fair: processing machinery, power machinery and electric power, general machinery and mechanical basic parts, construction machinery and agricultural machinery, alongside vehicles, vehicle spare parts, motorcycles and bicycles.
Phase 2: 23 to 27 October 2026, quality home life
Phase 2 shifts to the home and the shelf. It covers kitchenware and tableware, household items, general ceramics and art ceramics, glass artware, home decorations, festival products, gifts and premiums, clocks, watches and optical instruments, gardening products, furniture, building and decorative materials, sanitary and bathroom equipment, fashion jewellery, and prefabricated house and courtyard facilities.
For retailers selling homeware, gifts or seasonal decor, this is your week.
Phase 3: 31 October to 4 November 2026, better life
Phase 3 is the widest phase for consumer goods. It includes toys, children's, baby and maternity products, kids' wear, men's and women's clothing, underwear, sports and casual wear, furs, leather and down products, fashion accessories and fittings, shoes, textile raw materials and fabrics, cases and bags, home textiles, carpets and tapestries, office supplies, food, medicines, health products and medical devices, personal care products, toiletries, sports, travel and recreation products, and pet products and food.
Between the phases, the complex closes for booth dismantling and rebuilding: 20 to 22 October and 28 to 30 October. Plan travel around those gaps, not through them.
The Zones Worth Planning Around
Beyond the main categories, the fair sets aside themed zones that are easy to miss in a catalogue and hard to substitute anywhere else:
- · Service Robots Zone: humanoid robots, robotic dogs, dexterous hands, companion, delivery, inspection and cleaning robots
- · Smart Wearables Zone: smart watches, VR glasses and AI translation devices
- · Fashion Jewelry Zone: natural jewellery and jade, synthetic jewellery, and precious metal ornaments
- · Intelligent Healthcare Zone: intelligent diagnostic and medical equipment, medical robots, smart monitoring, smart wearables, intelligent physical therapy and smart rehabilitation
If your category sits inside one of these zones, say so when you plan your days. Booths are spread across a very large complex.
Before You Go: Registration and Preparation
- · Pre-registration is open all year round on the official Canton Fair website, so there is no reason to leave it to the week before you fly
- · New overseas buyers can apply for a buyer badge free of charge at the fair's alternative registration offices, including Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Guangzhou South Railway Station, Pazhou Ferry Terminal, designated hotels in Guangzhou, and the Canton Fair Hong Kong Representative Office
- · Check visa requirements with the Chinese embassy or consulate for your nationality and start the application early, since visa processing time is the step most first-time visitors underestimate
- · Prepare a one-page buying brief: categories, target price points, volumes, certification requirements and the markets you sell into
- · Decide your sample budget in advance, because sample costs, tooling quotes and courier fees add up quickly across a week
- · Bring business cards, and expect to exchange far more of them than you can follow up on
How to Work the Fair in Three Days Instead of Three Weeks
The buyers who leave with usable supplier lists all work the same way:
- · Study the exhibitor and product search before you travel and shortlist the booths that match your brief
- · Group the shortlist by hall, because the complex is large enough that unplanned walking consumes an entire day
- · Give each shortlisted supplier a fixed slot, and treat the first meeting as a screening call rather than a negotiation
- · Ask the same five questions in the same order at every booth: production capacity, MOQ, lead time, certification held, and whether they manufacture or trade
- · Collect samples rather than promises, and note the exact quote and the incoterm on the spot
- · Photograph the booth number with the business card so you can trace the supplier later
- · Follow up within 48 hours, while the conversation is still specific in your memory
If You Cannot Fly In: Working the Fair Remotely
The fair does not stop when you leave Guangzhou. The official website and the Canton Fair App run 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and display the same exhibition sections as the on-site event.
That means you can search exhibitors and products, filter by industry, product type, specifications, enterprise type and trade model, post a sourcing request, message suppliers directly, schedule appointments and exchange electronic business cards without leaving your desk. The platform also carries the live exhibition tours, themed forums and new product launches, and the app adds booth-level navigation, itinerary planning and AI-generated notes of your discussions.
What the platform cannot do is open the carton, feel the material or judge whether the factory can actually run your order. That is where local help earns its place. If you want the fair worked on your behalf, our team in China can attend your target halls, photograph and film the products you care about, collect samples, benchmark quotes from several exhibitors and report back in your language. Think of it as pre-shipment quality inspection applied before you place the order rather than after.
Canton Fair, Huaqiangbei or Yiwu: Which One Do You Need
These three sourcing destinations are often mentioned together and they solve different problems.
- · Canton Fair: a scheduled, three-phase exhibition of manufacturers across every major category, best for meeting factories at scale, comparing capability and collecting samples
- · Huaqiangbei: Shenzhen's permanent electronics market, best for components, accessories and fast-moving consumer electronics, open every day rather than three weeks a year
- · Yiwu: the small-commodities wholesale hub, best for low-value, high-variety consumer goods and seasonal items
If your category is electronics or accessories, our Shenzhen and Huaqiangbei sourcing guide covers the market side of the same trip. Many buyers do both: a week in Guangzhou for the fair, then two days in Shenzhen for components.
After the Fair: Turning Booth Contacts Into Orders
The fair is the beginning of a supplier relationship, not the end of a sourcing project. What happens in the two months after you get home decides whether the trip paid for itself.
- · Shortlist three suppliers per product rather than one, and request formal quotations against a fixed specification
- · Order samples from the shortlist and compare them against each other, not against the catalogue photo
- · Ask for certification files with the quotation, not after production, so compliance problems surface before tooling
- · Verify who you are actually dealing with: whether the exhibitor is a factory or a trading company, and whether the account name matches the contract
- · Book production slots early, because the weeks after the fair are also the weeks before the October holiday and the year-end peak
- · Confirm the inspection arrangement before the carton is closed, then the freight booking after it
If your order will land in the fourth quarter, the deadlines on the production side are tighter than they look. Our guide to the Q4 sourcing calendar sets out the holiday windows and the reverse timetable, and the guide to shipping from China covers the transport options and cost structure once the goods are ready.
FAQ
Which phase of the Canton Fair should I attend?
Match the phase to what you buy. Phase 1 for electronics, appliances, machinery, hardware, tools and vehicles. Phase 2 for homeware, kitchenware, gifts, decorations, furniture and building materials. Phase 3 for apparel, textiles, shoes, bags, toys, baby products, office supplies, food and medical devices. If your range spans several phases, plan two trips or send a colleague.
Do I need an invitation to attend?
Pre-registration is open year-round on the official website, and you should confirm visa requirements with the Chinese embassy or consulate for your nationality well ahead of travel. Registration and badge collection are separate steps, so leave time in your schedule for badge collection on arrival.
Can I buy at the fair, or is it only for meeting suppliers?
The fair is a business-to-business exhibition, so the value is in meeting manufacturers, comparing capability and agreeing terms rather than walking out with stock. Many exhibitors will sell samples, and sample orders are the normal way to start a relationship before a production order.
